CHECK A CONTRACTORS CREDENTIALS

It is critical that you do your due diligence when selecting the company that will ultimately perform mold remediation services in your home. You need to be sure that the contractor you choose is fully qualified, returns your calls promptly, and is willing to give you time to digest the information he has shared with you before making an informed decision on who to proceed with. Below is a useful guide that will help you make the right decision for you and your family.


  1. Be certain that the company you select is a fully certified as a mold remediation contractor through a reputable certification organization. Many waterproofing and general contractors pass themselves off as mold removal specialists to make a quick buck. Don't let them fool you. Be sure that you check their credentials first before you hire them.

  2. Be sure to verify that they have the proper insurance coverage. If they don't have both liability and workers compensation, don't let them inside your home. If an employee of their company gets injured on your property you will be liable. Moreover, if they damage your home you will have no recourse. Any reputable mold removal company will provide you with a copy of their insurance. If they make excuses or refuse to, don't use them!

  3. Make sure they are members in good standing with the Better Business Bureau. Also check their ratings and their history of complaints. A good warning sign is if they have unanswered complaints.

  4. Only hire a company that has a minimum of 10 years experience in mold remediation. Many new companies have recently popped up due to hurricane Irene and Hurricane Sandy. Be sure that they know what they are doing. There is never a substitute for experience.

  5. Be sure to sign a written contract prior to the start of your mold removal project. This contract should clearly state each step in the mold removal process. It should also include a detailed payment schedule and the estimated time the project should be completed.

  6. Never hire a company that you have an uncomfortable feeling about. Always trust your instincts!
